Rembrandt Van Rijn

Rembrandt van Rijn, a Dutch painter and etcher, was widely recognised as one of the greatest painters of all time.

His use of light and shade was unique and his dramatic,lively style contrasted with the rigid formality of many of his contemporaries.

The ‘Night Watch,’ his largest and most notable work, was completed at the peak of the Dutch golden age in 1642. This painting depicts a group portrait of a division of the civic guard and actually has another title: ‘The Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch.’

Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter and is perhaps the world’s most famous artist.

Although not widely appreciated during his lifetime, he is now considered an icon and some of his paintings are amongst the world’s best known works of art.

In 1888, he painted his now famous series of ‘Sunflowers.’ The paintings of fourteen flowers in all stage of life – from fully in bloom to withering – are famed for their great vitality and brilliant colours.

Johannes Vermeer

Johannes Vermeer is one of the most celebrated Dutch baroque painters of the seventeenth century. He is best known for his ability to create captivating portraits depicting subjects engaged in everyday activities.

In 1658 Vermeer painted one of his most famous scenes, ‘The Milkmaid.’ The still life conveys the domestic simplicity of a woman pouring milk into a bowl.

The fascinating play of light and shadow in this painting creates an intensely intimate atmosphere.

Frans Hals

Frans Hals was the leading painter in seventeenth century Haarlem, a major Dutch city.

Although Frans Hals painted some scenes of daily life, he is best known for his portraits of wealthy citizens. His work demonstrated a rare intuition and ability to seize a fleeting moment in the life of his subjects.

One of his most famous paintings is a large group portrait of the civic guards.

Frans Hals was commissioned to paint ‘The company of Captain Reinier Reael Lieutenant Cornelis Michielsz Blaeuw,’ also known as ‘The Meagre Company’ in 1633.
